Former Minister of Niger-Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s refusal to zone its presidential ticket to the south as reason.
Orubebe’s decision to severe ties with the PDP is contained in a letter dated 20th June, 2022 and addressed to the National Chairman of the party, Iyorchia Ayu.
In the letter, a copy of which was obtained by AIT, Orubebe said he has communicated his decision to withdraw from all PDP activities to the Chairman of his Burutu Ward 3 in Burutu Local Government Areas of Delta State.
He said PDP against the mood of the country and in total disregard for provisions of its own constitution threw open the zoning of its Presidential ticket thereby allowing the North to take control of the two most powerful seats in the party (National Chairman and Presidential candidate).
Orubebe, a staunch loyalist of former President Goodluck Jonathan said PDP has shown no serious sign in opposition ever since it lost power in “bewildered circumstances” in 2015 to regain power.
He said the decision to leave the presidential ticket opened thereby allowing the North to take it at the expense of the South has left nothing in the PDP to inspire his confidence and trust and that it was time for him to pursue his political dreams elsewhere.
Orubebe however did not specify the direction of his next move in the letter even though speculations run rife that he will be pitching his tent in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Many will remember Orubebe for his outburst at the venue of INEC Presidential election results collation centre on 31st March , 2015. Acting as the polling agent for the PDP, Orubebe alleged that INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega had compromised election results distrupting the process in very “dramatic” fashion.
Orubebe has since apologized to Nigerians for his actions and has been largely quiet politically since then.
