Practicing journalist’s have been encouraged to undergo regular eye checkups to prevent glaucoma that can result in permanent blindness.
The advice was given by an ophthalmologist with the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Dr. Maryam Idris in a paper she presented during a sensitization programme on eye care, organized by the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, in Kano State.
Dr. Idris said it glaucoma can only be diagnosed through regular eye examinations, and advised journalists in the state to visit Optometrists regularly.
The Vice President of the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists in the North West, Halima Musa, said the need to keep journalist physically equipped for the job made the sensitization programme necessary.

Kano State Commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba, commended the initiative and said the need for journalists in to do have regular body checkups cannot be over emphasized
The sensitization is coming on the heels of this year’s World Glaucoma Day, with a theme: “The world is bright, save your sight!”
