Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has formally declared to run for Office of the President under the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC in the 2023 elections.

Osinbajo becomes the fifth number two man in Nigeria’s over 61-year history to seek election to become the country’s President.

Former Vice Presidents or Chief of General Staff under military regimes to seek election as President include Shehu Musa Yar’adua, Alex Ekwueme, Atiku Abubakar and Goodluck Jonathan.

— Prof Yemi Osinbajo (@ProfOsinbajo) April 11, 2022

Only two persons who were deputies to former Heads of State or President ever succeeded their principals including Olusegun Obasanjo in 1976 and Goodluck Jonathan in 2010.

Olusegun Obasanjo became President after assassination of General Murtala Mohammed while Goodluck Jonathan succeeded President Umaru Musa Yar’adua after his death.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo formally declared his bid for 2023 presidency after late night meeting with APC Governors at his private residence in Abuja.

Elected and reelected as Vice President to President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 and 2019, Osibanjo has on a number of occasions served as Acting President during his principal’s medical vacation
