The Kaduna State Government has commenced the dredging of River Kaduna and desilting of drainages across the State to mitigate the impact of floodings.
The State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Abubakar Buba, disclosed this at the flag-off of the project, explaining that the initiative will be carried out in Kaduna, Zaria, and Kafanchan.
Following flash floods experienced in parts of Kaduna at the onset of the rainy season, the government said the environmental protection exercise is aimed at creating free flow of water to reduce the risk of flooding.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Abubakar Buba, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Linda Yakubu, said this year’s project will cover over 200,000 meters, an expansion from last year’s 160,000 meters, to reach more flood-prone areas.
Assistant Chief of the Disaster Reduction Unit, of NEMA, Umar Mu’azu, advised residents to embrace disaster-conscious practices to help mitigate emergencies.
Some youths in Sabon Tasha area of Kaduna metropolis pledged their commitment to supporting government efforts by carrying out community actions to prevent flooding.
The Kaduna State Ministry of Environment also appealed to traders and residents to desist from dumping refuse on drainages and road medians, warning that such practices not only block water channels, but also increase the risk of disease outbreaks.
