A deadly measles outbreak has struck Ungwan Kanawa in Zaria, where years of vaccine resistance have cost four young lives.

Fear and misinformation left the community vulnerable, but now, grieving parents are rushing to vaccinate their children as health workers and leaders battle to stop the disease from spreading.

For years, the small community of Ungwan Kanawa lived under the heavy shadow of misinformation.

Parents, believing that routine immunization was a ploy to reduce their population, steadfastly refused to vaccinate their children.

But that resistance has come at a painful cost.

During World Immunization Week, health officials who came to monitor polio vaccinations discovered a grim reality, a measles outbreak sweeping through the community.

About four to five children have already died, their young lives lost to a disease that could have been prevented.

Among the grieving parents is Safiatu, who lost four of her six children.

Amid the sorrow, she now sees hope. Enlightened about the importance of vaccines, she is grateful that her surviving children are now immunized.

The village head of Ungwan Kanawa, Nasiru Yunusa, says it took extensive efforts and persistent sensitization before the community finally began to accept immunization.

Officials monitoring the outbreak, including Gerida Birukila, Head of UNICEF’s Kaduna Field Office, expressed concern over the growing challenges, warning of a shortage of measles vaccines across the country.

In response, the Kaduna State Government has pledged to intensify efforts to address the situation and ensure that more children are vaccinated.

What began as a routine polio monitoring visit has revealed a much deeper crisis, and a community’s long, painful journey from fear to understanding.

Now, with new awareness and a renewed commitment to protecting their children, Ungwan Kanawa is embracing change, determined not to let history repeat itself.
