President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate deployment of an army battalion to Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, North-Central Nigeria, following a deadly overnight terrorist attack on Worro community.
The President said the new military formation will spearhead “Operation Savannah Shield”, aimed at flushing out the attackers, restoring security, and protecting vulnerable communities in the area.
According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President condemned the attack as cowardly and barbaric, describing the gunmen as heartless for deliberately targeting defenceless villagers.
President Tinubu expressed deep anger over reports that the victims were killed after resisting attempts by the terrorists to indoctrinate them with extremist beliefs, noting that the community chose to practice a peaceful and non-violent form of Islam.
He commended the courage of the residents, saying their refusal to embrace extremism reflected a commitment to peace, dialogue, and tolerance.
The President also directed federal and state security agencies to work closely to provide immediate relief and support for affected families, while ensuring that those responsible for the killings are tracked down and brought to justice.
He prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and extended his condolences to bereaved families, as well as the people and government of Kwara State.
