The trial of seven suspected abductors of Kano’s nine children has taken a new dimension as the state High Court addresses some irregularities in the arraignment of the suspects.
One of the suspects, Paul Oneh, had pleaded guilty to charges of abduction without a legal representation, a basic requirement in criminal matters.
At the commencement of the trial Oneh pleaded guilty to all 38 counts charges levelled against him, but the trial judge, justice Zuwaira Yusuf, delayed his sentencing because of the absence of a lawyer to defend him.
However, the six other defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Counsel for the defendants said based on the provision of section 276 of the administration of criminal justice law , the defendants have right to fair hearing .
Prosecution counsel, Amina Muhammad said they are ready for fresh arraignment to correct the irregularities.
Justice Yusuf adjourned the matter to February 26 for fresh arraignment of the suspects.
