Former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has formally announced his resignation from the party with immediate effect.

The development was made public in a press statement personally signed by the former national leader of the party on March 29, 2026.

In the statement, Kwankwaso described his decision as a difficult one, noting that he had been a committed and bona fide member of the party.

He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the NNPP’s National Leader and its presidential flag bearer during the 2023 general elections.

Highlighting the reasons for his resignation, Kwankwaso pointed to the “current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape,” which he said necessitates a strategic realignment.

According to him, the evolving political environment requires aligning with a platform that offers a more viable path toward achieving meaningful national change.

The former governor suggested that his move is driven by the need to reposition himself within a political structure better suited to addressing Nigeria’s challenges.

While he did not disclose his next political destination in the letter, he emphasized that his decision was guided by national interest and the pursuit of a more effective governance framework.

Kwankwaso also used the opportunity to appreciate the leadership of the party, including National Chairman Ajuji Ahmed and members of the National Working Committee, for their support during his time in the NNPP.

Despite his resignation, Kwankwaso assured party faithful and supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement of his continued commitment to national development.

He expressed optimism about future collaborations aimed at building a more prosperous Nigeria, signalling that his political engagement remains active despite his exit from the NNPP.
