The number of Universities in Nigeria has risen to 197, following the latest approval of the King David University of Medical Sciences (KDUMS) Uburu in Ohaozara LGA of Ebonyi State by the National Universities Commission.

The new University established by the Ebonyi State Government, received the nod of the regulatory body during the week when Governor Dave Umahi led top State government officials to present strategic documents of the institution at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

ait. live has been monitoring the progress of work at the University site, even as the academic session is expected to take off in September 2021.

The magnificent complex of the King David University of Medical Sciences sits on a 6,000 square meter landmass in Uburu, located about a hundred kilometers, South of the Ebonyi State capital, Abakaliki.

The tertiary medical facility which was initiated barely two years ago by the administration of Governor Dave Umahi is a signature project aimed at making Ebonyi State, a destination for medical tourism.

Government officials say, the specialized University will boast of state of the art facilities available only in the most advanced societies, in order to provide essential medical needs for people within and outside of Nigeria.

With the anticipated upscale of socio-economic activities within and around the institution’s environment when activities finally take off, even the locals are already looking forward in high hopes.

There are however concerns in some quarters about the real ownership structure of the new University with reports alleging that the institution may be privately owned.

But the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Information, Uchenna Orji is allaying such fears, putting the records straight.

Beyond the medical benefits of the establishment of the new University, the facility is expected to create thousands of jobs as well as attract direct foreign earnings, thereby improving the economy of the State and the country.
