Kogi Authorities Move Against Electricity Theft, Say ₦5 Billion Lost In Six Months

The Kogi Electricity Distribution Limited, KEDL, says it has lost over five billion naira to electricity theft, meter bypassing, and illegal connections within the first half of 2025.

The disclosure was made at a stakeholders’ town hall meeting in Lokoja, organized in collaboration with the Kogi State Electricity Regulatory Commission, KERC, where special courts to prosecute offenders was establish

Stakeholders in Kogi’s power sector are all expressing concern over the rising cases of electricity theft, which have continued to cripple power distribution and investment across the state.

The Kogi Electricity Distribution Limited (KEDL) says that between January and June 2025, it recorded a loss of over ₦5 billion, money the government says could have been channeled into improving power infrastructure and expanding human capital development.

The state government, in partnership with the Electricity Regulatory Commission, has established a Special Task Force and Special Courts to ensure that offenders are prosecuted swiftly and transparently.

Participants at the meeting express their frustrations over epileptic power supply and unfair billing but welcomed the move, describing it as a bold step toward restoring accountability and fairness in the electricity sector.

The Kogi State Government says the crackdown on power theft will continue, as it works toward achieving a reliable and sustainable electricity system across the state.
