The Nigeria Medical Association says urgent intervention is needed from the Federal Government, corporate organizations and international agencies, to address the humanitarian crises that may arise, from the flood disasters in Kogi State.
The Chairman, Kogi State Chapter of the NMA, Doctor Olusola Baoku, who made the call at a media briefing in Lokoja on Tuesday, revealed that many flood victims in Internally Displaced Persons camps are in urgent need of relief materials, palliatives and medical care, to avert the outbreak of diseases in the state.
From Ibaji, where over ninety-five per cent of the population was rendered homeless, to Kotonkarfe, Bassa and other parts of Ajaokuta and Lokoja in Kogi State, the people are now in serious humanitarian crises in the various Internally Displaced Person Camps.
Frightened about the possible outbreak of diseases as a result of this situation caused flooding, the Kogi State chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association, Olusola Baoku says, there is a need for urgent intervention from the critical stakeholders.

The NMA Chairman highlighted some health implications associated with the flood disaster, the social needs of the people and the multiplier effects of ignoring the victims of their fate.
At the moment, only the Catholic Diocese of Idah, the Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission, HYPADEC, and the National Assistant Publicity Secretary of the APC, Muritala Ajaka, have provided relief materials and interventions to the flood victims in Kogi State, in the form of cash, food, shelter and other important household materials, to keep them going.
