The candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, says its governorship candidate, Muritala Yakubu Ajaka, on Saturday afternoon, escaped an alleged assassination attack on his motorcade, by gunmen suspected to be that of the State Governor Yahaya Bello.

In a statement by the Director of Media and Publicity for the Muritala Ajaka Campaign Council, Faruku Adejo, some vehicles accompanying the candidate which were approaching Lokoja, at the vicinity of the Ram Market were blocked by the Governor’s Power Bikes and Toyota Hilux.

The statement added that the assault was heralded by a Mercedes Benz Limousine which carries Yahaya Bello’s official crest, accompanied by an open pick-up, loaded with masked and hooded men, bearing AK-47 Assault Rifles.

According to the statement, the masked men jumped down and began shooting at Muritala’s car, as well as other cars in the motorcade, which he said lasted for about five minutes, without being provoked.

The statement identified the Director General in charge of the prohibition of the proliferation of light weapons, Friday Makama, and other armed men.

The SDP Campaign Council, therefore, appeals to the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to demonstrate that his administration will not permit the brigandage, and call the governor to order.

Although Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, at a function on Saturday, accused the SDP candidate’s convoy of blocking him, while on his way from Abuja, just as he called on residents to remain calm, and allow security agents to do their work professionally.
