The recent appointment of Mr. Makama to oversee the recovery of illegally acquired weapons in Kogi State has sparked concern among some members of the public. Critics argue that the appointment is a deliberate attempt to silence dissenting voices.
According to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the responsibility of appointing police or military personnel to carry out such tasks rests solely with the police senior command or military senior command. Appointing a civilian, particularly one known to be a political actor, to handle firearms is not only unconstitutional but also a potential danger to the security of the state.
The decision by the state government to make this appointment cannot supersede the position of the law, and concerned citizens are calling on the Inspector General of Police to address the issue of security in Kogi State by best practices.
