The Kwara State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made what it describes as significant breakthroughs in its fight against illicit drug trafficking between January and August 2025, with the interception of over 2,888 kilograms of illegal substances including a milestone seizure of more than two tones of cannabis in just two days.
Commander of Narcotics in the State, Fatimah Popoola, made the statistics public during a press briefing at the Command’s Headquarters in Ilorin the state capital where she linked the surge in drug trafficking to rising insecurity,
The NDLEA state commander also described drug abuse as a major enabler of crimes like kidnapping and banditry.

She said the seized drugs were traced to Ondo State and were en route to Ilorin metropolis

The cannabis was cleverly concealed in sacks of sawdust and transported into Ilorin in a canter vehicle and a J-5 bus, but were intercepted by NDLEA operatives.
The Kwara NDLEA Commander also appealed for more government support, stressing the Command operates with just one vehicle.
In recent weeks, the Command has intensified awareness campaigns against drug abuse, focusing on student-populated areas like Oke-Odo and Malete home to the Kwara State University, identified as hubs for substance abuse in the state.
