Labour gears up for new minimum wage

The Nigeria Labour Congress is gearing up for a new national minimum wage.

Secretary-General, Medical And Health Workers Union of Nigeria, Yusuf Kiyawa gave the hint at the formal inauguration of the Joint public service Negotiating Council in the Federal Capital Territory.

It’s been almost three years since President Muhammadu Buhari signed into law a new national minimum wage of N30,000.

Some states are yet to begin full implementation of this amount, in spite of several meetings with the joint public service negotiating Council of organised labour on consequential adjustment of salary.

The situation is also worrisome, despite a template approved by the federal government for such adjustments.

However, organised labour is not deterred as it hints at moves for a new wage.

The Federal Capital Territory is not a statutory state, but has a structure like any other, giving way for it to have its own joint public service negotiating Council, for workers.

The Joint public service negotiating council is made of eight unions both from the Trade Union Congress and the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC.
