Fresh tension has gripped the Labour Party as a new ruling has further complicated the party’s long-running leadership crisis, deepening divisions within the opposition fold.
The decision effectively displaced the National Working Committee led by Julius Abure and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission to recognise the faction headed by Nenadi Usman.
The Abure-led group swiftly rejected the ruling, announcing its intention to approach the appellate court.
The faction argued that the decision was based on an incorrect interpretation of an earlier pronouncement of the Supreme Court of Nigeria delivered on April 4, 2025.

According to the group, Senator Usman is not a registered member of the Labour Party, describing her emergence as caretaker chairman as incompatible with the party’s constitution.
They further maintained that the ruling contradicts the Supreme Court’s established position that courts lack the powers to appoint leaders for political parties, stressing that leadership issues remain internal matters to be resolved by party structures.
The latest development adds to the uncertainty surrounding the Labour Party’s internal cohesion, raising fresh questions about its stability and direction ahead of future political engagements.
