Labour prepares for strike in Kogi State over non-implementation of minimum wage

Organised labour in Kogi State, North-Central Nigeria has given the administration of Governor Yahaya Bello till the end of work on Monday to make its position known on the implementation of N30,000 national minimum wage. Meanwhile, a 14-day ultimatum for an indefinite strike takes effect from Tuesday.

State Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Onuh Edoka, stated this after the State Executive Committee meeting of the union held in Lokoja, the state capital.

Edoka said it was exactly two years as at January 14, 2022, when a committee to negotiate implementation of the minimum wage met with no feedback from the State Government.

After its State Executive Committee meeting comprising of all its affiliates in attendance, the NLC Chairman said government has till Monday, January 24 to make its position known or an ultimatum for strike action will be issued by Tuesday, the 25th of March.

Organised labour says issues of paper promotion without cash backing, and payment of salary by percentage to teachers and local government workers will also no longer be allowed to continue in the State.

When contacted, State Commissioner for Finance, Asiwaju Idris said, areport has been submitted to Governor Yahaya Bello for action. He therefore called on labour to be a little patient with government.
