The 2026 edition of the Lagos City Marathon will be special in a lot more ways than one as it will be the first that would showcase the beauty of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and its resplendent aesthetic impact on the landscape of Lagos.
Minister of Works, Dave Umahi stated this in Lagos ahead of the marathon holding on Saturday, February 14, 2026. Represented by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State Olufemi Dare, the minister emphasised the importance of the road as a national asset which puts the nation on the map.
Dare who also revealed that all arrangements has been concluded to ensure that there are no movements during the period of the race
disclosed that the minister would be physically present in Lagos on Friday, February 13 ahead of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon on Saturday, February 14.
“It is in recognition of the strategic role international sporting events like the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon play in boosting the image of the country that the Federal Ministry of Works through the minister, Engineer Dave Umahi directed me to be here to put machinery in motion for a smooth and successful use of this facility (a part of the completed stretch of Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway) for the race.
Dare who succeeded the former Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Olukorede Kesha further gave insight on plans saying vehicular and human traffic would be restricted for the period of time the race would be expected to hold.
“All illegal movements would not be allowed on the road from 12:00 midnight and 12:00 mid day on Saturday February 14, 2026.
“This is to facilitate seamless logistics for the international athletics event, being the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon coming up on that day”

In a first for Africa’s biggest road race, the 42-kilometre marathon will now start at ORCA Mall on Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Islands, sweep through sections of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, and climax at the iconic Eko Atlantic City, showcasing Lagos as the heartbeat of road racing in Africa.
The inclusion of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway also offers a stunning showcase of one of Nigeria’s most ambitious infrastructure projects through a World Athletics Gold Label race watched across the globe.
