The Lagos State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has rejected any deductions in or a distorted salary structure for Doctors in Lagos State, threatening to take firm action whenever necessary to defend the dignity of their profession and the health rights of Nigerians.

Speaking at a Media briefing with the theme: “A Critical Appraisal of Nigerian Budgetary Allocations for Health, Negotiating for Better Medical Salary Scale and Relativity for Medical Doctors”, the branch Chairman, Dr Babajide Saheed said it was shameful that despite rising government resources, health care has remained grossly underfunded, while Doctors are overworked and driven out of the Country.

The Media briefing which was organised as part of activities to harald the 2025 annual Scientific Conference of Doctors in Lagos State, turned focus on the lingering issues of poor working conditions and alleged distorted salary structure of medical doctors.

Dr. Saheed advised the country’s Minister of Health, Commissioners of Health and other policy makers to stop focusing on projects commissioning and research partnerships at the expense of healthcare manpower.

The Lagos State NMA Chairman condemned what he said was the July and August 2025 salary cuts imposed on medical Doctors in Lagos State, demanding immediate reversal

The non provision of Call Duty meals at the Lagos University Teaching hospital (LUTH) and continued stay of Doctor Olugbenga Owoeye as Acting Medical Director at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Yaba also came up for deliberation.

The 2025 Scientific Conference of the Nigerian Medical Association is a week long event that also features sub themes like; Medical Legal Challenges in Practice, free medical outreach for the masses, among others.
