Lagos State Government has ordered a probe into the alleged medical negligence that led to the death of Chimamanda Adichie’s son at Euracare Hospital on Younis Bashorun Street in Victoria Island on January 6, 2026.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in a condolence message to the family of the renowned Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Adichie, promised justice on the matter. In the message signed by Special Adviser on Health to the Governor, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, the Lagos State Government reinstated its commitment to safeguarding the health, safety, and rights of all residents and to continuously strengthen oversight of medical practice to prevent the recurrence of such tragic incidents.
In line with the commitment, Governor Sanwo-Olu has directed the Lagos State Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency, HEFAMAA to immediately commence a thorough, independent, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, with a view to unraveling the immediate and remote causes of the death.
In line with this directive, HEFAMAA is said to have commenced investigation and has visited the facility involved as part of the ongoing inquiry. The agency will conduct a comprehensive review of all allegations and reports relating to the incident
The agency will work in close collaboration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN and other relevant regulatory bodies in the course of the investigation to ensure a holistic, credible, and professional review process.
The Nigerian Society of Anesthetists, NSA according to its National President, Professor Alhassan Mohammed is also monitoring allegations of medical negligence surrounding the death of Chimamanda Adichie’s 21-month-old son, Nkanu. The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA in Lagos State is also following up on the issue.
Euracare Hospital says it has also launched an internal probe following the allegation that negligence at the facility led to the death of the 21-month-old child.
