Liberian President calls for improved women empowerment in West Africa

Liberian President, George Weah, has appealed to governments in West African to adopt resolutions that will advance women’s empowerment in the sub-region.

President Weah, who made the appeal during the opening ceremony of the ECOWAS first delocalized meeting of the Joint Committees in Monrovia, said the need for increased women participation and occupation of strategic positions should not be underestimated.

Citing successes and challenges facing Liberia, including violence against women and girls, the country’s Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Affairs, Williametta Saydee-Tarr, and Liberia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Dee-Maxwell Kemayah, called for strong action to be taken to address the negative trend not only in Liberia but in the whole of West Africa.

They described President Weah as a Feminist-In-Chief, concerned about gender mainstreaming.

Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Sidie Mohamed-Tunis, emphasized the need for 30 per cent safe seats to be given to women as the first giant step towards Sustainable Development.

Head of Liberia’s delegation to the Community Parliament, Edwin Snowe, commended the Parliament for choosing Liberia as the venue for the meeting.

The Theme of the 2021 First ECOWAS Delocalized Meeting is “Empowerment of Women in the Sub-Region.
