The prevailing harsh economic realities are responsible for many poor persons in Kano, North-West Nigeria resorting to scavenging solid waste as a source of livelihood.
A community medicine practitioner with the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Dr. Abdullahi Olumisi says scavengers are exposed to contact with deadly diseases.
On daily basis, refuse dumps usually attract scavengers looking for what can be reused or recycled.

To many people, the dump site may look horrible or even an eyesore but the scavengers see treasures and fortunes laying in there. They pick anything reusable and sell to would-be buyers.
None of the scavengers wants to be seen on video or speak to the media perhaps for fear of public ridicule. The greatest risk to them however are the dire medical consequences of the business which some of them are not even aware of.
However, many of these scavengers some of who are out of school children appear not to have alternatives.
It is obvious that the harsh economic situation in the country influences their choice of trade with the attendant medical risks
