Stakeholders From Oron Ethnic Nationality In Akwa Ibom State, South-South Nigeria Are Demanding The Immediate take-off Of The University Of Maritime Studies, Oron, Nearly Four Years After the law establishing The Institution Received Presidential assent.
The Group Who Made This Known At A Media Conference In Abuja Expressed Concern Over What They Described As Prolonged Delay In Implementing The Law Establishing The University.
They insist that continuous delay in commencing operations at the University of Maritime Studies, Oron, is undermining Nigeria’s maritime development and denying young Nigerians valuable educational opportunities.
The stakeholders want President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government to urgently intervene by appointing principal officers, constituting the governing council and issuing clear directives to relevant ministries and agencies to fast-track implementation.

They argue that the delay goes beyond Oron community interests, stressing that the university was conceived as a national centre for maritime excellence, research and innovation capable of driving Nigeria’s blue economy.
The institution was formally established through an Act of the National Assembly that was signed into law on the 16th of February, 2023. But, despite the legal backing, the university is yet to commence full operations.
