Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris has released the sum of 54 million naira for payment of dowries for 300 ladies to be married off in the state’s second mass wedding exercise.

Chairman of the Main Committee and former Deputy Governor, Suleiman Argungu announced this at a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi.

Argungu said the success of last year’s mass wedding, organised by an NGO, encouraged the government to sponsor another set this year.

A total of 600 brides and grooms from less privileged backgrounds will be wedded under the present arrangement by the government.

Each couple will receive N180,000 as dowry, along with furniture, mattresses, bedding, and other household utensils.

Argungu explained that screening committees have been established in all the 21 local government areas in the state to select eligible couples, based on set criteria and a prospective groom must have a source of income and accommodation for his bride.

He emphasised that the selection process would be inclusive, accommodating adherents of various faiths and without political bias.

The event is scheduled for February 27, 2025 at the Emir of Gwandu’s Palace in Birnin Kebbi.
