The organised labour movement in Kaduna has reiterated its commitment to championing the rights and welfare of workers in the state, amid growing economic challenges.

The Kaduna State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Ayuba Suleiman, made the pledge during the May Day celebration.

May Day festivities kicked off at Murtala Square in Kaduna, with workers from various unions gathering to mark the occasion.

Before the event officially began, I spoke with several workers about their expectations, who expressed concerns over the current harsh economic climate, indicating that their wages are struggling to keep pace with rising costs of living.

The ceremony began as soon as Governor Uba Sani arrived, marking the first time a sitting governor is attending the May Day celebrations in the past decade.

The Organised Labour in Kaduna outlined several key issues for the state government to address, including improving the economy, raising wages and tackling the problem of insecurity.

Governor Uba Sani congratulated the workers and commended the strong relationship between the organised labour and the Kaduna State government.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising workers’ welfare.

To underscore the government’s support for workers, Governor Sani presented cheques to civil servants, as part of an economic empowerment initiative, under the revolving loan scheme.

He also announced additional economic empowerment programmes that are expected to be launched soon, indicating the administration’s dedication to worker-centric policies.
