Media executives in Nigeria have again called for more media engagements and visibility for women in politics ahead and beyond the 2023 general elections.

They renewed the call at the one-day consultative dialogue in Lagos State, South-West Nigeria on the candidature and prospects of female candidates in the forthcoming elections.

Rising from the quarterly dialogue between UN Women and media executives were practitioners whose goal is to facilitate improved participation of women in politics and propagating them to the electorate through media reportage.

They asserted that female candidates are not adequately projected in the media space like their male counterparts.

Top of the challenges attributed to this are socio-cultural, inadequate funding, lack of confidence and inadequate knowledge on topical issues, a development they promised to tackle head on.

The UN Country Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Beatrice Eyong and Lanre Arogundade of the international Press Centre, asked female political contenders to be open to the media to propagate their cause.

To ensure inclusivity of women in politics, the UN has established a resource centre for capacity building through training and provision of funds.
