The Nigerian Association of Medical Physicists has called on the National Assembly to pass a bill, recognizing medical physics as a profession.

Speaking during the 2023 Annual Scientific Conference and Workshop with the theme “Medical Physics, Creating Innovation For Safe Radiation Medicine Practice”, the National President of the association, Professor Fatai Balogun appealed to the government not to allow the profession to fade away in the country.

Balogun who noted that the number of Medical physicists has declined to about a hundred in the whole country due to brain drain, said the bill will help create a regulatory body for the professionals and also create a curriculum for the profession in tertiary institutions.

Also speaking, a clinical scientist, Olusola Sammy, who stressed the importance of the profession both in Nigeria and globally, said the bill will go a long way to help the profession grow in the country.

On his part, a Medical Physicist, Professor Samuel Inyang said, the bill when passed into law, will regulate the ethics and practice of professionals.

The Nigerian Association of Medical Physicists is the administering body for medical physicists in Nigeria.

Its members are involved in Radiotherapy, Radiodiagnosis, Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Protection and Education.
