Niger State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management says Internally Displaced Persons camp opened in the wake of the recent Mokwa flood disaster is 90 percent empty after the state government redeemed its pledge of presenting a cheques of one million Naira to each of the victims of the incident.
Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mairo Mann disclosed this when she received donations of relief materials from the national leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria, (CAN) on behalf of the deputy governor, Yakubu Garba.
Presenting the truckload of items comprising bags of maize, beans and guinea corn at the Deputy Governor’s office, the National President of CAN, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, represented by his vice, Stephen Panya, expressed deep sorrow over the magnitude of destruction caused by the flood and the pain it inflicted on the communities.

He said the tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the collective responsibility to support one another, during times of distress.
The CAN president urged the federal government and emergency management agencies to monitor the River Niger and its tributaries to avert a repeat of the Mokwa flood incident.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Mairo Mann said that as they await the donations from the Federal Government, especially the rebuilding of houses for the victims, the state government will continue to prioritize the safety and protection of the lives and property of citizens.
As of the time of filing this report, the death toll from the flood incident stands at 209.
