The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has appointed former Ghanian President Nana Akufo-Addo as Head of its Election Observation Mission (EOM) to the forthcoming presidential election in the Republic of Benin, scheduled to take place on April 12, 2026.
According to a statement signed by ECOWAS Commission’s president, Omar Touray, the appointment is in line with ECOWAS’ commitment to promoting democracy, good governance, and regional stability.
The mission, expected to be deployed from April 7 to 15, 2026, will observe the election pursuant to the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance (2001).

The appointment of former President Akufo-Addo reflects ECOWAS’ reliance on experienced leaders to ensure peaceful, transparent, and credible elections in member states.
This move demonstrates the community’s confidence in Benin’s democratic process.
ECOWAS has called on all stakeholders in Benin to uphold peace, tolerance, and the rule of law during and after the election as the observation mission aims to promote stability and ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
