Nasarawa

The Nasarawa state house of assembly has passed a bill into law to prohibit all forms of violence against persons and provide maximum protection and effective remedies for victims.

The bill stipulates that perpetrators of rape are to get life imprisonment to serve as deterrent to others and for peace to reign in the state.

The speaker of the Nasarawa state house assembly, Ibrahim Abdullahi, who is also the sponsor of the bill announced its passage during the house proceedings in Lafia.

Following the consistent activities of rapists in the state and the lack of appropriate framework to deter them, the speaker of Nasarawa state house of assembly Ibrahim Abdullahi said it is necessary to have a law to address the rise in rape cases.

The speaker thanked  his colleagues for supporting the bill to see the light of the day.

Abdullahi said the bill when assented to will also address the issue of violence against all persons in the state as stiffer punishment have been recommended.

The speaker noted that where the offender is less than 14 years of age, the offender is liable to a maximum of 14 years imprisonment.

A clean copy of the bill is to be produced for the governor’s assent.
