Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, says the state is breaking new grounds in agricultural production as harvesting begins on 3,300 hectares of rice at the Jangwa–Agwatashi farm in Awe and Obi Local Government Areas of the state
The Governor told the harvesting team that the expansion from what was cultivated last year was a proof that Nasarawa state’s investment in large-scale farming was already yielding positive results.
Tractors, harvesters, and trucks work round the clock as Governor Sule returns to the Jangwa farm to flag off the harvest of 3,300 hectares of rice up from 2,000 last year.
The visit comes just two weeks after he assured that harvesting would begin, which is a promise now fulfilled.
It is a major boost for food production and a clear move towards positioning Nasarawa State as a leading rice hub.
The Governor expressed satisfaction with the quality of the rice produced and noted that the variety being grown is among the best in the world.
According to Governor Sule, the partnership with a private rice company marks a turning point as paddy is now being harvested, bagged, weighed, and loaded directly from the farm for the first time. He explained that the arrangement ensures that the rice will reach the market under a unique brand name, clearly identified as a product of Nasarawa State while also paving the way for larger investments, with the government considering expansion to about 8,000 hectares.
Government officials say the initiative goes beyond farming but also as a quest to fight food insecurity in the state.
The harvest of 3,300 hectares at the Jangwa Agwatashi rice farm, will continue for days if not weeks, thereby marking another major step in Nasarawa state’s drive towards food security and agricultural transformation.
