The Nasarawa State Government has returned over 1,000 Almajiris to their various states of origin.

Governor Abdullahi Sule said this while inspecting the children before their departure to their home states.

Following the Coronavirus pandemic Northern states have sent young beggers known as Almajiri back to their states of origin. Tests carried out on some of them on arrival in their states came out positive for Coronavirus.

In Nasarawa State, there are over 23,000 Almajiri children who are not from the State.

Governor Sule explained that the decision to return them was taken by the Northern Governors as part of strategies in the fight against Covid-19.

The Emir of Lafia, Sidi Bage and the State Chairman Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, Muazu Maipata said the decision of government is apt as the Almajiri children remain a threat in the face of the pandemic if no action is taken.

In the first phase, over 1,000 Almajiri children have been returned to the 5 states of Plateau, Jigawa, Taraba, Gombe and Kaduna. Other batches are expected in the coming days.
