Nassarawa Killings

The dust is yet to settle following the gruesome murder of dozens of pastoralists in Doma, Nassarawa State which has continued to generate reactions.

Recently a forum of concerned elders of Benue extraction raised deep concern over what they termed as “hasty” the conclusion that the Governor, the people of Benue State, and its legally established livestock guard were involved in the worrisome killings.

The pressure group not only agreed to form a judicial panel of inquiry but also called for continuous dialogue and restoration of communal peace.

Late January’s massacre of dozens of pastoralists of the Akwanaja community of Doma Nassarawa State which shares boundaries with Benue elicits this reaction from these Benue Elders.

According to the elders, the death toll occasioned by herder attacks in the nation’s food basket has steadily risen with 18 out of 23 local councils taken over by herders increasing the number of displacements yet the vulnerable farmers lack the tools even to attempt a reprisal.

They have drawn the attention of security agents to a recent threat to attack parts of the State by the insurgents which must be foiled.
