The National Assembly has approved an extension of the 2024 Budget’s lifespan until June 2025 to ensure implementation of key government projects.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the announcement during the joint sitting of the National Assembly, highlighted that the 2024 budget has seen a 50% performance rate in capital expenditure and 48% in recurrent expenditure.
He says given these positive results, the National Assembly deemed it necessary to extend the budget’s lifespan until June 30, 2025.
He noted that the enabling law for this extension has already been put in place demonstrating the Assembly’s commitment to building on the successful performance of the current budget.
The Senate President emphasized the importance of the Ministers and Heads of Ministries and Departments to respond promptly to requests that mandates them to defend their sectoral allocations as part of the legislative oversight process.
Akpabio also urged Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to prioritize their roles in the budget defense, stressing the need for timely submissions and active participation
He warned that the National Assembly would take decisive action against MDAs that fail to appear for budget defense sessions or cause unnecessary delays.
He called on Nigerians to exercise patience and continue supporting President Tinubu’s vision.
