One of Nigeria’s leading opposition political parties, the Labour Party, LP and the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC are fighting it out over the party’s planned national convention.
While the LP calls for the resignation of the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, the labour centre on the other hand is accusing the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure of planning a secret convention, after leaked notification letter to INEC.
The political commission of the Nigeria Labour Congress in a statement titled “A Misadventure in Political Mischief” describes as clandestine, the scheduling of a supposed National Convention of the Labour Party in March 2024 by the National Chairman, Julius Abure, without informing the labour centre.
NLC says the continued refusal of Julius Abure to display the leadership qualities set in the founding ideology of the Labour Party, presents him as unfit for the position.

The NLC says his desperate wishes to cling to LP Chairmanship has been discovered to be the reason behind all the crises in the party.
The Labour Centre says contrary to the solidarity spirit of the Labour Party, Julius Abure has decided to run the party as a Sole Administrator, the same allegations that have been hurled at him by the numerous persons he is fighting in the party.
The Labour Party in swift reaction says the planned convention followed the decision of the party’s National Executive Council and it was ironical for the same NLC which has been agitating for a convention to demand for the rationale for a convention.
The party in its statement advised Joe Ajaero, to resign as the NLC President and join in the contest for the National Chairmanship of the party at the scheduled convention on March 27, 2024. LP says the interference of the present leadership of the NLC in the party is really choking and not allowing the party to breathe.
In the same vein, the Youth Wing of the party passed a vote of confidence on the National Chairman, Julius Abure and the national leader, Peter Obi.
The youths urge the NLC to learn from other developing countries across the world, how the Labour movements have given support to Labour Parties across the world in Australia, Brazil among others who have captured power in their countries, saying such intellectual exploration has become necessary to collectively work towards the good of Nigerians.
