The recently concluded nationwide End-of-bad governance protest that resulted in looting and destruction of some national assets has been linked to the indiscriminate use of social media by youths and influencers.

As a result of the development, the Nigerian Army during its 35th Nigerian army social media seminar which held in Minna, Niger State, urged youths and social media handlers, to use the social media platform to enhance national security and development.

According to the Nigerian Army, the essence of the seminar is to enlighten and sensitise the Nigerian youth and social media handlers, on the essence of harnessing social media, for promoting national security and development in Niger State, and the country at large.

The Special Guest of Honour at the seminar and Commander of the Corps of Artillery in Kontagora, Major General Markus Kangye, reminded the youths and social media influencers, of the need to be responsible, while using the social media.

The Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Nigerian Army Headquarters, Abuja, Major General Nosakhare Ugbo, urged social media handlers to understand that each post, each share, and each comment on social media, has the potential to undermine or strengthen the collective efforts, towards a peaceful and united Nigeria, hence the need to use social media responsibly, and ensure that their digital footprints enhance national unity and development.

The Acting Governor of Niger State, Yakubu Garba, stressed the need for social media handlers to always verify their contents before posting or sharing, to avoid escalating conflict, or damaging an individual’s reputation.

Two participants at the event, Oguche Kenneth and Deborah Adeye, advised other social media users and influencers, on the need to be positive about the activities of the Nigerian Army, and the country in general.

With the theme of harnessing social media for national security and development, the seminar had in attendance, over 600 youths, who have been urged to always tread with caution, to bring about peace, unity, and development.
