National Sports Festival: 21 Kano athletes, officials killed in road crash

Scene of fatal road crash involving Kano State contingent to 22nd National Sports Festival in Ogun State

At least 21 members of the Kano State contingent returning from the 22nd National Sports Festival in Ogun State have reportedly lost their lives in a fatal accident in Kura Local Government Area.

It was gathered that the vehicle, carrying about 35 passengers, mainly athletes and officials, fell off a bridge on Saturday around at about 9am, resulting in a devastating crash.

One of the survivors, Ado Salisu, said the incident occurred as the team approached their destination in Kano, after travelling overnight since Thursday night from Ogun State, on completion of the National Sports Festival.

While 21 fatalities have been reported, several others sustained injuries and were rushed to the Kura General Hospital for emergency treatment.

It was also gathered that efforts are underway to transfer the other injured sports persons to the Murtala Specialist Hospital in Kano metropolis as at the time of this report.

All efforts to reach the Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development as well as the Director-General on Media and Publicly, Sanusi Bature have not been successful to.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mustapha Muhammed however told AIT.livd via telephone that efforts are on to reach out to the appropriate authorities within the Ministry to get an update on the unfortunate development.
