The Nigerian Navy has raised the alarm over increased irregular migration and human trafficking through the eastern flanks of the nation’s maritime corridors, vowing to tighten security on the waterways in the days ahead.

The Navy said many young Nigerians have met with rough deaths while embarking on such illegal and desperate journeys; which have also tarnished the image of the country.

Commandant of the Naval War College, Rear Admiral Muritala Bashir made this known during the Naval Warfare course 5 Inter-Agency Cooperation in Maritime Security Operations Workshop in Calabar, Cross River State capital.

Bashir said the workshop is aimed at harnessing expert opinions on the best ways to tackle illegal migrations.

The Comptroller-General of Immigration, Muhammed Babandede, who was represented by the Cross River State Comptroller, Ifeoma Okpara promised to work with the Navy to achieve desired results.

The workshop with the theme: Curbing irregular migration through cooperative maritime security, had in attendance officials from
NAPTIP, Customs, Police, NSCDC, and the Department of State Services.
