The Nigerian bar association has called on the Nigerian police to immediately commence disciplinary action against erring officers and those who have breached the rules of engagement in dealing with the citizenry.

The national president of the association,  Olumide Akpata, made the call on Tuesday at a press conference in Abuja, Akpata said that this has become necessary so as to demonstrate accountability, restoring confidence, and sanitising the system.

The lawyers professional body also demanded that the police should not use live ammunition to disperse ongoing protests against the disbanded police unit.

Akpata also demanded an immediate audit of the detainees in the detention camps run by the disbanded s.a.r.s, with a view to ensuring that all Nigerians unjustly and unlawfully clamped into detention are immediately released.

Akapata said the NBA leadership will work with heads of courts across the country by paying monthly visits to police stations and other detention facilities within their territorial divisions, and also  set up an NBA reform team that will work with police and other institutions in developing a comprehensive blueprint for police reforms in Nigeria.
