In a bid to ensure a faster release of candidates’ results for the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, the National Examinations Council (NECO) has commissioned a highly sophisticated scanning machine called the Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) Scanner.
The Registrar/Chief Executive of NECO, Professor Dantani Wushishi, who inaugurated the newly installed equipment at the ICT Department in Minna, said it is part of the council’s effort to improve accuracy, speed and reliability, in its examination process and release of results.
The Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) scanner is a device that reads and interprets markings made on paper forms, like bubble sheets, to capture data digitally, commonly used for grading tests, surveys, or questionnaires, where users fill in designated areas with a pen or pencil.

Professor Dantani Wushishi, while commissioning the over 500 million Naira worth machine, disclosed that the Scantron Insight 1500c, is a high-performance OMR scanner, known for its precision, speed and ability to handle large volumes of scripts efficiently.
According to him, the newly acquired scanner can scan over 15,000 OMR sheets per hour and 250 per minute.

He further explained that the acquisition of the high-speed scanner is a testament to NECO’s commitment to leveraging technology in all its examination processes.
According to him, with this new addition, NECO will significantly enhance its data processing capabilities, ensuring faster and more accurate results processing for millions of candidates across the world.
On the maintenance and lifespan of the machine, the technical adviser of the company, Tom Harry, said modalities have been put in place.
The acquisition and installation of the new scanner, according to the examination body, aligns with its vision of delivering world-class examination services, while maintaining the integrity of its assessment.
