The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, is urging Nigerians to adopt stricter safety measures in the handling of materials and appliances that could easily ignite, as the country experiences unusually high temperatures.

Director-General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, says the warning follows a noticeable surge in daily temperatures and emerging heatwave conditions across several parts of Nigeria.

According to the agency, recent forecasts by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) confirm that elevated temperatures are likely to persist in the coming weeks.

NEMA says extreme heat increases the risk of fire outbreaks, particularly where electrical appliances, gas cylinders, fuel, and other combustible materials are poorly handled or improperly stored.

The agency therefore advises households, business premises, and public institutions to exercise greater vigilance by ensuring proper ventilation, switching off electrical devices when not in use, and regularly inspecting gas and power installations.

NEMA adds that early preventive measures are essential to reducing the likelihood of heat-related fire incidents during this period of intense weather conditions.
