Contrary to the position canvassed by the Commissioner for Technical Services of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC Ubale Maska that Nigeria does not have the adequate 2G and 3G coverage to enable the transmission of election results electronically, AIT has fact checked it to be false.

Appearing before the House of Representatives on Friday as the lawmakers debated the clause on electronic transmission of results, Maska told the House that only 50.3 percent of the over 190, 000 polling units across the country are covered by 2G and 3G networks based on network coverage analysis conducted in 2018.

He also said that 49.7 percent of the country is without network coverage.

But data from the Nigerian National Broadband Plan 2020-2025 published by the NCC shows figures different from what the NCC Commissioner told the House of Representatives.

According to the NCC report, as of the fourth quarter of 2019, 2G nationwide coverage stands at 89%, 3G at 74%, and 4G at 37%.

In the report, the NCC went further to project that the growth will continue based on “the country’s strong demographics and increased broadband penetration”
