The new headquarters of the Economic Community of West African States in Abuja is nearing completion and is expected to become operational by March 2026, marking a major milestone in the sub-region’s integration drive.

Located on a 7-hectare site along the Abuja Airport Road, the complex will house the ECOWAS Commission, Parliament, and Court of Justice, consolidating the institution’s core organs within a single, purpose-built facility.

The ECOWAS Commission President, Omar Touray, disclosed the timeline during an inspection of the site, noting that construction has reached 96 percent completion, with the final phase covering restoration works, defect rectification, testing, and commissioning.

Dubbed the “Eye of West Africa,” the headquarters is fully funded and constructed by the People’s Republic of China through the China International Development Cooperation Agency, underscoring growing development cooperation between China and West Africa.

When completed, the new headquarters is expected to serve as a central hub for ECOWAS activities, strengthening coordination on peace, security, governance, and economic development across the region, while symbolising renewed commitment by member states and partners to regional integration.
