The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has called on journalists nationwide to set aside a day for reflection and renewed dedication to the fundamental principles of journalism.
In a statement signed by the President of the Guild, Eze Anaba, and the General Secretary, Onuoha Ukeh, the NGE said the call was made in honour of the late veteran journalists Yakubu Mohammed and Dan Agbese, whose careers exemplified excellence, courage, and service to the public interest.
The Guild noted that both men, co-founders of Newswatch Magazine, played pivotal roles in strengthening investigative reporting and advancing press freedom in Nigeria through decades of principled practice.
According to the NGE, the proposed reflection should focus on the profession’s core values, truth, accuracy, fairness, objectivity, independence, integrity, ethical conduct, transparency, and accountability, which remain essential to credible journalism and democratic governance.
The Guild extended its condolences to the families of the departed journalists and the Nigerian media community.
