The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, has called on the Federal and State Governments to resume life-saving vaccination of children against killer diseases.
Executive Secretary of the Commission, Tony Ojukwu, made this call in a statement to mark the 2020 Day of the African Child. Ojukwu hinted that the focus on Covid-19 interventions has to lead to other child survival and health initiatives such as immunisation to suffer immensely.
He further expressed dissatisfaction over the effect of Covid-19 pandemic on children’s education leading to the closure of educational and recreational facilities for children, with attendant consequences on human rights and social development.

The Commission further called on the Federal Government to employ a mechanism that will effectively curb the rise in sexual violence and exploitation of children. He, however, urged the State Governments to as a matter of urgency implement the Child Rights Law in the interest of justice for children.
