More than 48 hours after the boat mishap involving 300 passengers with 150 rescued and 28 bodies recovered so far, the Niger State government has finally reacted to the development.
The mishap occurred on the river Niger upstream of Jebba dam, at Gbajibo Community of Mokwa Local Government area, on October 1.
Governor Umar Bago, in a condolence message by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, described the incident as unfortunate and disheartening.
According to him, the recurring cases of boat mishaps in the State over the past few years are worrisome, pointing out that the government would redouble efforts to ensure strict compliance with safety measures to tame the ugly trend.

Although preliminary reports indicate that the victims are from Kwara state, the incident occurred in Niger State.
The governor, therefore, sympathised with the leadership and people of the Mokwa local government area over the incident, as well as commiserates with the families of the victims, praying for the repose of the souls of the departed, comforting the bereaved and granting quick recovery to those injured.
