As the deadline for the junta in Niger Republic to restore President Mohamed Bazoum to power draws closer, Nigeria’s foreign Affairs Ministry has held a meeting with Ambassadors and High commissioners of various countries in Abuja, the Nation’s capital.
The permanent secretary, Adamu ibrahim lamuwa told the diplomats that president bola Tinubu is simply interested in a return to civilian constituted authority in Nigeria’s northern neighbours.

The diplomats serving in Nigeria gathered at the headquarters of the foreign affairs ministry in Abuja and on the agenda was ECOWAS’s plan to restore democratic rule in Niger republic over a week after president Mohamed Bazoum was detained and later ousted by the military led by the commander of his special protection unit.
The ministry’s permanent secretary, Adamu ibrahim lamuwa, told the envoys that ECOWAS has zero tolerance for unconstitutional change of government, and that the seven-day ultimatum for restoration of president Bazoum to his position still stands.
ECOWAS had sent a delegation headed by the former Nigerian head of state, general Abdulsalami Abubakar to niamey but reports say they did not meet the junta leader.
The permanent secretary said that for now, they will continue with mediation to ensure that peace and political stability are restored in niger. They are also seeking the support of the international community.
The meeting later went behind closed doors.
