As a mark of respect for the victims of the Mokwa flood disaster that has claimed the lives of about 160 with over 3,000 displaced, the Niger State government has ordered the cancellation of Sallah Durbar celebrations across the 25 local government areas of the state.
In a statement by the Secretary to the Government of Niger State, Abubakar Usman, the statement has also been directed for a low-key celebration in the state.
Usman emphasized that this decision was taken as a mark of respect for the victims of the tragic incident and to allow for a period of mourning, prayer and reflection.

While describing the incident as one of the worst in decades, the Niger State government urged citizens to use the occasion to pray for the departed souls and engage in acts of charity for the affected communities.
