The junta which ousted Niger Republic President Mohamad Bazoum had initially rejected to talk with ECOWAS after over two weeks of removing Bazoum.
The Coup leader, Major General Abdourahmane Tchiani had on Saturday met a group of Islamic scholars from Nigeria led by the national leader of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah, Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau.
The junta-appointed Prime Minister, Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine, who announced this dialogue, said the talks would take place in the next few days.
This is as ECOWAS is set to deploy troops to restore the detained Bazoum to power following Thursday’s extra ordinary summit, the second on the Niger Republic coup.
On Saturday, members of the ECOWAS parliament also held an extra-ordinary summit, a virtual meeting, in which only 22 of the 116 parliamentarians participated, with the advisory legislative body divided on the impending military action.
