The military junta that overthrew President Mohamed Bazoum of Niger Republic says it will handover to a civilian administration within three years.
The Head of the Military Council, Major-General Abdurouhamane Tchiani announced this in a late night broadcast on national television. The former head of Presidential Guard to Bazoum said within a month, a committee will be set up to formulate modalities for the drawing up of a new constitution.
The junta leader’s comments come shortly after meeting the ECOWAS delegation led by former Nigerian military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar who also led an 11-month transition programme in the last 1990’s, and handed over to the civilian administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo.

General Tchiani insisted in the broadcast that Niger Republic does not want to go to war, but will defend itself if attacked.
He made no mention of ousted President Bazoum, whom the junta has said will be charged for treason, with carries a death penalty according to Nigerien laws.
